Green Steps School
Chapman Elementary School has achieved Green Steps status through efforts to become more environmentally sustainable. Under the leadership of the Environmental Club, students are composting cafeteria waste, reducing use of Styrofoam, recycling Capri Sun packages and Elmer's glue bottles and sticks, and re-using pop tops and discarded crayons. Students and staff are working to become a Certified Green Steps school by next school year.
Chapman wins Palmetto Silver and CAG Awards!
Chapman Elementary School has earned both the Palmetto Silver Award and the CAG (Closing the Achievement Gap) Silver Award for 2010. The awards were announced by the State Department of Education and the Education Oversight Committee in April. The Palmetto Silver is given for "high levels of absolute performance and high rates of growth" on the PASS tests. The CAG is given to schools for "substantial improvement in the achievement of African-American students and those eligible for reduced meals."
Red Carpet Award
Chapman Elementary School has been recognized as a Red Carpet School for creating a family-friendly environment and for providing excellent customer service. The school was one of six winners in District 7 and one of 124 state-wide. State Superintendent of Schools, Jim Rex, commended the award-winning schools for their efforts to involve parents and community members in the educational process.
